As our kids grow older and more independent, we’ve transitioned from typical family vacations to becoming adventure and explorer travelers. Now that our children can handle their own belongings and keep up with our pace, we’ve found a new love for exploring different cultures and destinations instead of just lounging around hotel properties.
However, let’s be real—these trips are far from relaxing. They’re incredible experiences, yes, but they require a ton of planning, researching, scheduling, and herding everyone in the same direction. While the memories and adventures are unforgettable, they’re also a lot of work. That’s why, every now and then, we crave a true vacation—one where fun and relaxation are the primary goals for everyone involved. Enter the all-inclusive beach resort.
The All-Inclusive Beach Resort: A True Family Vacation
Sure, at these resorts, you might have to battle for a poolside lounge chair, deal with sand getting everywhere, and maybe the food isn’t five-star quality. But there’s one magical component that makes it all worthwhile: the Kids Club.
Yes, the Kids Club—a fenced-in paradise where you can drop off your children, sign some papers, and then enjoy some well-deserved adult time by the pool, maybe even savor a meal with your partner without any interruptions.
All-inclusive beach resorts vary greatly, offering a wide range of experiences. In January, we visited the Dreams Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. We spent five nights there with friends from Minnesota, who have children close in age to ours.
Our Stay at Dreams Resort, Punta Cana
The Dreams Resort was good, and the clientele were a mix of families and couples. With multiple restaurants to choose from, including additional options at the neighboring Secrets Resort (an adults-only property), there was something for everyone. But most importantly, the kids loved the Kids Club, which was open late enough for us to enjoy a quiet dinner at one of the adults-only restaurants.
The food at the resort was decent with enough variety to satisfy even the pickiest eaters. Our kids particularly enjoyed the buffet—because what kid doesn’t love pairing California rolls with pasta primavera and cheese cubes, topped off with a slice of chocolate cake?
The beach area was another highlight. It offered plenty of shaded huts, perfect for escaping the sun during the day. The resort is situated on a beautiful stretch of beach, ideal for early morning walks—though I was the only one in our family who took advantage of that.
The Kids’ Favorite: The Water Park
For the kiddos, the highlight of the trip was definitely the “water park.” While the resort’s website might label it as such, it’s really just two slides and a toddler splash area.
Nevertheless, our kids adored it, and we parents appreciated that we could sit anywhere around the area and keep an eye on them.
Final Thoughts: Adventure vs. Relaxation
While adventure trips are undeniably exciting and full of rich experiences, there’s a special place in our hearts for a resort vacation. The balance of relaxation and fun makes it the perfect getaway for a family looking to unwind.
