Our family fell in love with Savannah on an impromptu getaway a few weeks back, so this weekend, we headed back for more of that Southern charm. This time, we brought the crew, planned a long weekend, and booked a condo on Tybee Island. Despite cooler-than-expected temperatures, it was another memorable experience—and a weekend full of food, family, and fun.
Beach Time on Tybee Island (Well, Almost)
Just a few weeks can make a huge difference when it comes to beach weather! Our “warm” beach days were now brisk and breezy, turning our cozy tent into a windblock and giving us about two short outings before Ike made it clear he wasn’t interested in a beach freeze-out. Our beach gear couldn’t shield us from the chilly waves, but a few sand mounds (attempted castles) made it all worthwhile.
Almost Rubbing Elbows with Sophia Vergara
We just missed Sophia Vergara by about a day! Naturally, Ike had to do his best “celebrity in the square” impression. Thankfully, he had his entourage (a.k.a. family) on hand for the perfect shot. Savannah’s historic squares are beautiful any time of year, but it turns out they’re also great for celebrity sightings!
Seafood Feast at The Crab Shack on Tybee Island
By far our best meal was at the Crab Shack, a local favorite for seafood on Tybee Island. We ordered the Low Country Boil sampler, a feast for three, complete with shrimp, crab legs, corn, and more. We were in seafood heaven, and it was clear why this spot is a must-visit for any seafood lover.
Mini-Golf Showdown
Isaac squeezed in a game of mini-golf, and the family joined in. Let’s just say, playing with a kiddo on your back adds a whole new level of challenge! Even with a few light rain showers, we had some fun family competition—Isaac beat me by one stroke, but who’s keeping score?
Ghost Tours, Candy Stops, and Savannah Classics
While Isaac and Gabby braved a ghost tour in downtown Savannah, I stayed true to my “chicken” status and opted out. Ike and I decided to keep things sweet with a visit to the famous Savannah Candy Kitchen and a stop at the iconic Forrest Gump bench in Chippewa Square. Because, as Forrest says, “life is like a box of chocolates.” 🍫 Or as Ike remembers it, “a chocolate box”.
Tips for a Family-Friendly Weekend in Savannah and Tybee Island
If you’re planning a Savannah and Tybee Island family trip, here’s what we found helpful:
- Check the Weather: Coastal temperatures can change quickly, so bring layers.
- Food Stops: The Old Pink House for the Southern experience, The Crab Shack on Tybee for seafood.
- Plan for Famous Savannah Spots: Like Forsyth Park, Chippewa Square, and the many historic squares perfect for people-watching.
